There are many types of leaks, like the ones that can flood, while others are not so bad. The way that a leak is dealt with will hinge on the type of leak. If there is a leak at a joint, then it might just need a tighten, however if it is in a pipe it could be more involved, and might need totally replacing or patching up. A Brockley Plumber can repair or replace pipework. In ice cold conditions, water that sits in a pipe turns can turn to ice if the weather is cold enough. The ice will expand until it eventually splits the walls of the pipe or breaches a joint. Pipes that are made of copper are more likely to split, lead pipework can stretch to accommodate the expansion and survive a few winters before it breaches. The only other reason for leaks is a failure either through deterioration of the materials used or because a joint has breached. If you can, make a permanent repair with a new piece of pipework or renew the joint in question. Brockley Plumbers are professional tradespeople. To repair a split pipe: Firstly, try and drain the pipe unless it is frozen, in which case make the repair before it thaws out. A pipe leak can be fixed in a temporarily by forming a sleeve from a piece of rubber hose which you cut to size and place over the split. Bind the hose by twisting wire around it or use a couple of jubilee clips. Putty can also be used to patch a leak. This putty is supplied in two parts which are mixed together. Leave for about 25 minutes to harden slightly. Press the putty over the leak or hole, and build it up to about 3-6mm thick. The putt will will cure to its full strength in around 24 hours, but you can run low pressure water right away if the putty is wrapped in self-adhesive tape.
