The use of a Garbage disposal unit is a great saver for many people as we become more ecological, but these units will at some stage become clogged. This may be due to feeding the garbage into the unit too quickly, failing to run enough water while the garbage is being mashed or even dropping things in it like a spoon or fork etc. The garbage disposal is not perfect, so don’t think that will eat everything that is dropped inside. Corncobs or fish and chicken bones thrown into a GDU can cause it to clog and fail.
Warning:
You must never use chemical solutions for cleaning a GDU as they have a corrosive affect on internal parts and even your health. Professional plumbers like Brockley Plumbers can unclog your GDU.
Good Idea:
A fresh lemon cut in half, thrown in the GDU every few months will deodorise the unit.
Unclogging a GDU:
1). Isolate the power to the GD unit. Remember that the switch may be defective, so do not put your hand in the disposal, even if the power is off.
2). Visually inspect the unit for any foreign objects blocking the GDU. If an object is stuck, then, using a pair of pliers, reach in and pull it out.
3). Turn the power on and reset the safety cut-outs if required. A Brockley Plumbercan unblock a GD unit.
Still Clogged?
1). Isolate the power once more, then, insert a long wooden sick or dowel, maybe even a broom handle and remove the problem. Not your hand.
2). Use the same handle to rock the impeller in the unit to make sure that it is free to move. This impeller spins really quick to mash the food, so if the impeller moves freely, switch the power back on and test.
